“Embedding DEI into the Coaching Culture” Building an Organizational Coaching Culture. Edited By Behnam Bakhshandeh, William J. Rothwell (Taylor & Francis, 2024).
Building an Organizational Coaching Culture is a comprehensive collection of expert pieces examining the models, methods and approaches to establish a sustainable coaching culture in organizations.
In her chapter, “Embedding Diversity, Equity & Inclusion into the Coaching Culture,” Maria Morukian explores how a coaching culture is only attainable if the organization has fully embraced and embedded the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion. Coaching cultures cultivate curiosity and collaboration, and ensure individuals feel empowered to give their best. However, nondominant social identity groups (e.g. women, racial, ethnic and religious minorities, people with disabilities) have historically been marginalized, misunderstood, and minoritized, thus prohibiting everyone from being able to fully leverage the possibilities a coaching culture provides. Thus, a coaching culture cannot exist if the organization and its leaders are not deeply invested in fostering DEI.

“Every trainer has probably had an experience with a hostile participant, that person who at the very least is silent and withdrawn. Sometimes the individual is openly argumentative, condescending, and disruptive. I have had my fair share of such participants, especially when conducting diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. Challenging though they may be, I have learned a great deal from them, and at times the hostile participants can become the most committed learners when given the chance.”
